Japanese-style acupuncture, one practitioner, one quiet room

Fine needles, shallow insertion and a lot of careful touch. I see adults and families by appointment, and children have a session of their own with gentle tools.

Tad Oshiro

Acupuncturist and owner

I learned this style from one teacher, and I still study it every month.

Japanese-style acupuncture is quiet work: fine needles, shallow insertion and a lot of palpation. Before I place anything, I feel the pulse, the skin and the belly, and I let that tell me where to begin. Many visits use only a few needles, and some use none.

My teacher trained at a small school in western Japan that taught touch before needling, and he taught a handful of working acupuncturists here in Honolulu. I studied with him for years. I still meet with a study group each month to compare notes and keep my hands honest.

The style

What stays the same at every visit

The details change with the person in front of me. These four things don't.

  • Touch first

We start with the pulse, the skin and the belly, so the treatment begins from what I feel and not from a checklist.

  • Fine, shallow needles

Thin, single-use needles, placed shallowly and often only a few. Some visits use none at all.

  • A quiet rest

You rest under a blanket while I check in. The room stays quiet, and you can say stop at any moment.

  • One small thing at home

Perhaps a warm towel, a seed taped to the ear to press now and then, or nothing at all.

Sessions

Choose a session

Every session starts with a conversation, and we agree on what to do before anything begins.

Adults and teens

  • First visit

    75 minutes

A long conversation, a touch-based assessment and a first treatment, then a plan you are free to change.

  • Follow-up visit

    45 minutes

A short check-in, the treatment and a note on what to try before next time.

  • Session without needles

    45 minutes

Touch, warmth and gentle tools over the skin, with nothing inserted. For anyone who would rather not have needles today.

  • Short visit

    30 minutes

A brief treatment for someone who already has a plan with me: a few points, some warmth and a quick check-in.

Children

A parent or guardian stays for the whole session.

  • Pediatric session

    30 minutes

Tapping and stroking with gentle tools, no needles inserted, at the pace your child sets.

  • Parent and child

    60 minutes

A parent and a child, one after the other, in a single booking.

Ask for a written estimate when you book.

The room

One table, a few tools, plain light

Everything in the room is here for a reason, and you can ask me about any of it.
